BFR lets you build real strength using surprisingly light weights — which makes it one of the most valuable tools in early rehab, after surgery, or when a joint can't handle heavy load yet.
Blood flow restriction (BFR) training — provided at Creekside by Chad Smurthwaite, PT, DPT, OCS — is one of the most useful tools we have for rebuilding strength when traditional heavy lifting isn't an option yet.
How it works
BFR uses a calibrated cuff to safely and partially limit blood flow to a working limb while you exercise. That controlled environment lets your muscles build meaningful strength and size using loads as light as 20 to 30 percent of normal — a fraction of what conventional strength training requires.
It's not a generic tourniquet. The cuff pressure is personalized to your limb by a trained therapist, and sessions are supervised and progressed as you tolerate.
Why it's so useful in rehab
After surgery, a fracture, or with a painful joint, heavy loading often isn't safe or tolerable. Left alone, muscle weakens quickly. BFR lets us keep building strength during that window — protecting the healing tissue while keeping the muscle strong and ready for the next phase. It's also valuable for injured athletes maintaining strength and for older adults rebuilding it with less joint stress.
Is it safe?
When applied by a trained clinician with calibrated, personalized pressure, BFR is well-supported by research and considered safe for appropriate patients. We screen everyone for suitability before starting and integrate it into a broader, individualized plan.
