What is blood flow restriction (bfr)?
Blood flow restriction training, provided at Creekside by Chad Smurthwaite, PT, DPT, OCS, uses a calibrated cuff to safely and partially limit blood flow to a working limb — letting you build meaningful muscle strength and size using loads as light as 20–30% of normal, a fraction of what traditional strength training requires. That makes it uniquely valuable early in rehab, after surgery, or when a painful joint can’t tolerate heavy weight yet, helping you hold onto and rebuild strength when you’d otherwise lose it.
What blood flow restriction (bfr) helps with
How we diagnose
BFR is applied by a trained therapist using a calibrated, personalized cuff pressure — never a generic tourniquet. Your therapist screens for suitability, sets the right pressure for your limb, and integrates BFR into a broader program. Sessions are closely supervised and progressed as you tolerate.
Treatments we offer
You shouldn’t have to lose strength while you heal. BFR lets us load muscle and stimulate strength gains when heavy weight isn’t an option yet — protecting healing tissue while keeping the muscle strong and ready for the next phase.
