How Medicare covers physical therapy
Medicare Part B covers medically necessary outpatient physical therapy for a diagnosed condition. There is no longer a hard annual cap on PT — once you pass a threshold amount, your therapist simply documents that ongoing care remains medically necessary. We track your benefits and keep you informed about coverage throughout your plan of care.
Do I need a referral?
Oregon is a direct-access state, so you can typically begin physical therapy without a physician referral. Traditional Medicare does not require one for an in-network therapist. Some Medicare Advantage plans may require a referral or prior authorization — our front desk verifies before your first visit and handles any paperwork.
What to bring
Bring your Medicare card (and any Medicare Advantage or supplement card), a photo ID, a list of medications, and comfortable clothing you can move in. New-patient paperwork can be completed ahead of time from our Patient Forms page.
